The keiko itself is done by non stop attacking and blocking by both sides with moderate speed
防具付稽古
Suhada Keiko 素肌稽古 allows attacking a full range of target areas without protective gears, but for injury considerations purposes, certain targets are discouraged. Bogu-tsuki Keiko allows faster speed and a greater varietyof techniques to be practiced that some techniques without protective gears are not easy to perform or make it difficult to train due to the possibility of injury. 一本組太刀
Perhaps Gokaku Kakari Keiko 互角掛稽古 is the most important part of the kumi training to allow both sides a smoothly flow of skills donating, to train the 5 senses of awareness, body movements and footwork in a moderate tense up condition.
Besides the above mentioned types of keiko, there are also
.Kakari keiko 掛り稽古, a short, intense, attack practice.
.Hikitate-geiko 引き立て稽古or Toritate keiko 取り立て稽古, through practice where a senior guides a junior.
.Sute keiko 捨て稽古, high level to give the “gap” for the lower.
.Ishujiai 異種試合, using different types of weapon in a sparring.
.Taryujiai 他流試合, to spar between different styles or different schools of martial artists with the same kind of weapon or with different weapons.
Tactics commonly used in kumi keiko
1. Deai 出会い -means to advance while meeting the opponent. For example one moves in (directly forward) to strike on the face so as to reduce the opponent’s ability to maintain stability (c.f. Sensen no sen先前の先).
2. Irimi 入身 - means to move close to the opponent, which takes away his or her ability of movement. This is usually done at a diagonal.
3. Kusshin 屈伸 /Ageru 揚げる or 上げる - are lowering or raising the center of gravity. These may be thought of as dropping the body weight [center of gravity], or lifting(raising) the center of gravity. The first can prevent the opponent from throwing you or sinking your body weight to the strike, and the second is used to throw the opponent.
4. Nogare 逃れ - is a lateral movement used to avoid an attack.
5. Hiraki 開き -Evasion though pivoting the body with hiraki ashi 開き足 (diagonal step forward or back), evasion to the side.
6. Ayatsuri waza 操り技 -refers to “leading or manipulate” the opponent; that is, you move ahead of him or her in such a way s/he is forced to follow you.
7. Kotai 後退 - means to move back from an opponent to avoid attack. However, the movement must not place you in a disadvantageous position. This may also be referred to as “nagashi,” which is a diagonal movement backwards away from the attack.
8. Muchimi 黐身/餅身 - refers to maintaining body contact with an opponent, as though “sticking” to him or her.
9. Tenkan-ho 転換歩 - are methods of turning the body in order to maintain stability and place oneself in position for a technique; commonly, a throw or search for an opening, or uke in close quarter.
10. Mittsu no sen 三つの先
Senzen-no-sen 先々の先 - Attacking once your opponent has started but not completed their attack (Bruce Lee’s method) .
Go-no-sen 後の先 - respond to an attack with a counterattack or block / counterattack.
Sensen no sen 先前の先 / 対の先 -Attacking before your opponent attacks, a preemptive attack (c.f. Deai 出会い).
