It is often interchangeable between the terms iaijutsu and battojutsu, which deals specifically with the rapid techniques for drawing of a sword and striking in a single motion. 居合の理合いには「鞘の中の勝」. This technique may be used aggressively to wage a premeditated surprise attack against an unsuspecting enemy, or a counterattack act against an aggressive enemy. The term battojutsu was used during the Warring States Period, while the term iaijutsu was developed slightly later in the period as evidenced by its more philosophical name. Since martial styles generally did not have intercourse because they were enemies (among other reasons, including geographic isolation), what one style (ryu) might call iaijutsu is what another style with similar movements would call battojutsu.

 

Iaijutsu was said to be found at the latest Muromachi period 室町時代末by Hayashizaki Shigenobu 林崎甚助 (1542 or 1548 -- 1621), founder of the school Hayashizaki-ryu 林崎流.

 

居合術の興りは、江戸中期頃と思われる。それ以前に「居合」という抜刀の極意があったのかも知れないが、剣術とは独立して考えられるようになり、特異な流派を形成するのは、やはり、江戸中期以降のことであろう。

 

However, the modern meanings of  iaijutsu and battojutsu are different, schools which style themselves battojutsu ryu emphasize the perfection of Tameshigiri cutting technique, as opposed to iaijutsu which tend to focus on drawing in particular at a seated posture.

 

江戸時代、武士は室内で腰に大刀を差して正座をしません。正座は 徳川幕府 3 代将軍家光の頃から流行っていったようです。それ以前は­アグラ座りか、片膝立て座りでした。 城中でも、屋敷内でも、武士が大刀を腰に差す事はありませんでし­た。 ­だから脇差を使う、小太刀技も発達しました。 3 代将軍以降、武士が正座で座るときは大刀を「やや右後ろ側」に置く­­のが作法でした、ですから一般的に正座した際に右側に刀を置くのは「敵意が無い証拠」。 しかし敵意のある者の前では、抜刀しやすいように「左側」に置きました。

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

侍は座る時に腰の大刀を必ず鞘ごと抜いて左手で持って座ります。それが最低限の礼法です。

 

上様の前では右手で持つか、殿中に入る前に大刀を預けます。

 

戸山流の中村泰三師範が 40 年ほど前に、西東社から「居合剣道」という本を出しておられます。その中に武士の作法では決して現れない正座での帯刀を、「明治を境に作法が誤って伝えられたものではないか。小太刀の技が誤って伝えられたものではないか。今となってはわからない」というような記述があります。当時、高校生でしたが、本を読んで実戦を旨とする戸山流の中村師らしい疑問だとおもいました。 長年ずっと気になっていましたが、ご説明で良く理解できました。それで「正座の部」というのがあるんですね。実戦（武士の実生活）では決して現れない、侍が侍でなくなりつつあった幕末期に、思いつきで出来た技法なんですね。スポーツとしての居合ならそれで良いと思います。

 

 

 

Here, to eliminate the confusion of terminology, we use the tern Battojutsu for standing up posture to draw the sword and Za Iaijutsu for seating posture while the long sword is placing on the floor. These does not contradict the conventional meaning nor the etiquette traditions.
